George Crane was a bestselling author of books for children. His books include the Mr. Men series, The Berenstain Bears series, and The Big Red Barn. He began writing as a young man in his hometown of New York City, publishing his first children's book at age sixteen
He became an editor at Doubleday & Company before becoming an assistant editor at Random House in 1941. He joined the army during World War II and served in New Guinea, Okinawa, Burma, and China. Following the war's end he married his wife Sarah Skelton Crane on Christmas Day 1946.
He died on April 3, 1969 in Bedford Hills, New York after suffering a stroke while on vacation at the family retreat of his daughter Grace Crane Dickson in Southampton, New York.
